STORYLINE:

U-S special forces in Baghdad blasted their way into underground tunnels in the north-east of the city on Monday.

The troops accessed the tunnels from a building in an area called 'Medical City' and searched for Saddam Hussein's most loyal fighters - the Fedayeen.

The US special forces used 12-bore shotguns to open doors and gates in the vast complex of tunnels.

During their sweep of the complex, they uncovered what appeared to be ammunition crates and medical supplies.

Earlier on Monday, a resident of Baghdad showed reporters a map which he says showed underground tunnels in the city.

He said he found it amid the chaos and looting that swept Baghdad after US forces ousted the ruling Ba'ath government.

The man was hopeful the map could give clues to the whereabouts of his relatives - imprisoned by the former regime - if they are still alive.

Many in Baghdad believe their lost relatives are imprisoned in underground prison cells.
